Abstract:

One of the most promising techniques IC designers can implement in order to reduce the electromagnetic emission of ICs is based on spread spectrum clocking. Nowadays, such techniques are often used to improve the electromagnetic compatibility of electronic systems. In this presentation a general overview of spread spectrum techniques, the history and the benefits of using frequency modulation in order to reduce the emission will be highlighted. Based on the measurement of the conducted electromagnetic emission of an electronic system it will be demonstrated how the electromagnetic emission can be reduced. It will be shown how typical spread spectrum parameters like frequency deviation, modulation frequency and modulation signal can be optimized in order to maximize the emission reduction in certain frequency ranges. Additionally the advantages and drawbacks when using spread spectrum techniques will be explained.

CVs:

Bernd Deutschmann has received his M.Sc. degree and the Ph.D. degree in telecommunication engineering from the Graz University of Technology, Austria, in 1999 and 2002, respectively. In 2006, he joined the Automotive Power EMC Center of Infineon Technologies AG, where he worked on the improvement of the EMC of ICs for automotive power applications. Since 2014 he is with the Graz University of Technology, as a Full Professor with the Institute of Electronics. During his research activities, he has applied for several patents and has authored and coauthored numerous papers and technical articles in the field of electromagnetic compatibility of integrated circuits.

Gunter Winkler received the Dipl.-Ing. degree in electrical engineering from the Graz University of Technology. Since then he is working at the Institute of Electronics at the above mentioned university. During his work he finished his Ph.D. in 1992. The main focus of his scientific work in the field of electronic circuits and systems is the electromagnetic compatibility of analog and digital circuits as well as high resolution A/D-Converters. He was establishing the EMC-Laboratory at the Institute of Electronics for project related measurements and practical training of students.
