Zavod za automatiku i računalno inženjerstvo, KoREMA i IEEE Computational Intelligence Society Chapter pozivaju vas na predavanje: "Model Predictive Control for Industrial Applications" koje će održati dr. Georgios Papafotiou, ABB Corporate Research Center, Dättwil, Switzerland.

Predavanje će biti održano u ponedjeljak 29. ožujka 2010. godine s početkom u 11:00 sati u prostoriji A-105.

The abstract:

Model Predictive Control represents an exciting academic research field and at the same time a well established and mature technology in many industrial applications, where physical processes need to be controlled in an efficient and reliable way. Until recently, however, its appeal has been mainly restricted to processes with rather slow dynamics with sampling times ranging from a few minutes to many hours, such as the ones encountered in the areas of (petro)chemicals, minerals and metals. The main reason for this restriction can be traced to the computational demand that optimization-based algorithms such as MPC can pose to the control hardware platforms, since in its most common version MPC requires the online solution of a constrained optimization problem at each time step. Nowadays, however, the increased computational capacity that is becoming available in the commonly employed controllers has encouraged the emergence of MPC applications in the automotive, and more recently the power electronics industry, where the time scales are in the milli- or even the micro-second area. This talk tries to emphasize this visible trend in industrial reality and present recent developments in the application of MPC for the efficient control of Medium Voltage induction motor drives.

A short bio:

Dr. Georgios Papafotiou was born in Thessaloniki, Greece in 1974. He received his Diploma and his PhD in Electrical Engineering in 1997 and 2002 respectively, both from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. In 2003 he joined the Automatic Control Laboratory at ETH Zurich, where he held a Senior Research Assistant position. His research interests were in the field of modelling, analysis and optimal control of hybrid systems, focusing on power electronics applications. In 2006, he joined the ABB Corporate Research Center, Dättwil, Switzerland, where he is currently working on the development of modern control and estimation methods for power electronics applications.
