Open Lecture: “The threat landscape and how to stay safe online”
For almost a decade the threat landscape has been dominated by cybercrime, i.e. malware designed to make money illegally. Most attacks are random and speculative in nature - not aimed at a particular person, but created to steal from anyone unlucky enough to fall into the nets of the cybercriminals. Such indiscriminate attacks continue to make up the lion's share of cybercrime. However, it's clear that the number of targeted attacks is increasing. During the last year or so we have seen a steady stream of attacks focused on specific organizations. Often the starting-point for such attacks is exactly the same as for the general attacks that we have all become used to - tricking individuals into disclosing information. But in the case of a targeted attack, the aim is to use the data to get a foothold in the victim organization.
This presentation will outline the major trends in malware development, the ways in which malware spreads and the things we all need to do to minimize the risk of infection and stay safe online.
Agenda:
- How malware gets in
- Targeted attacks
- Some examples
- Non-commercial attacks
- Major trends
- Future prospects
- How to stay safe online
