Područje rada odjela za računarstvo obuhvaća sve vidove teorije, oblikovanja, prakse i primjene metoda i sustava vezanih uz računarstvo i obradu informacija. Djelovanje odjela usmjereno je na znanstvenu, stručnu, obrazovnu i društvenu komponentu. Kroz razmjenu tehničkih informacija i znanstvenih spoznaja, odjel teži unaprjeđenju struke i održavanju visoko profesionalnog položaja među članovima. S druge strane, kroz organizaciju znanstvenih i stručnih predavanja i rasprava te izdavanje tehničkih časopisa, promiče se višedisciplinarna suradnja s drugim strukama i otvorenom društvenom zajednicom.

Abstract
One of the major goals of natural language processing (NLP) is automatic text understanding. This task is difficult due to the many-to-many relationship between text and meaning: the same work can have multiple meanings (ambiguity), and the same content can be expressed in multiple ways (variability). In addition, human text understanding draws heavily on word knowledge that is not explicitly represented in text but needs to be inferred.
This talk provides an introduction to and overview of the field of textual entailment whose goal is to develop a generic model of those inferences that are necessary for text understanding and other NLP tasks. The talk will cover motivation, methods, technology, and the practical use of entailment to analyse real-world customer interaction data.
About the speaker
Sebastian Pado holds the chair of theoretical computational linguistics at IMS, Stuttgart University, since 2013. He studied computational linguistics, computer science, and cognitive science in Saarbrücken and Edinburgh and received his PhD from Saarland University in 2007. After working as a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University, he held faculty positions at the Universities of Stuttgart (2009-2010) and Heidelberg (2010-2013). His research interests lie in lexical semantics and semantic processing, primarily from distributional and multilingual perspectives.
He is author of more than a dozen journal articles and fifty papers at major conferences. He has served as executive board member for ACL SIGLEX, editorial board member of Computational Linguistics and the ACM Transactions on Speech and Language Processing, conference area chair (EMNLP 2008, COLING 2010, EACL 2012), and as organizer of several workshops and shared tasks.
