Odjel za tehniku u medicini i biologiji

Područje interesa Odjela obuhvaća sva područja biomedicinskog inženjerstva kao interdisciplinarnog područja primjene inženjerskih znanja u medicini i biologiji. Rad članova Odjela uključuje primjenu matematičkih metoda, eksperimentalne postupke, razvoj novih tehnologija te praktične kliničke aplikacije. Odjel također provodi obrazovne i profesionalne aktivnosti te suradnju s gospodarstvom.

Sažetak predavanja

The social burdens of cardiorespiratory disorders, including asthma, sleep apnea, and heart failure create an immense cost to the healthcare system in Canada and globally. Currently, 1,000,000 Canadians have heart failure, and 20% of patients with heart failure are readmitted to the hospital within 30 days of discharge. Asthma is not optimally controlled in 90% of Canadian asthmatics, and asthma attacks lead to 70,000 emergency department visits per year. In addition, sleep apnea, which causes breathing to stop frequently during sleep worsens heart failure by 3-fold and asthma exacerbations by 2- to 7-fold.

This talk provides a short summary of our research on developing non-invasive and personalized technologies that can conveniently monitor physiological signals at home, with a special focus on health equity. Particularly, we will discuss:

  1. Development of digital technologies to increase equitable access to sleep care
  2. Development of wearable technologies to monitor body fluid, as a physiological link between sleep apnea, asthma, and heart failure
  3. Development of smart textiles for holistic management of cardio-respiratory disorders

Životopis predavačice

Dr. Yadollahi holds a Canada Research Chair-Tier 2 in Cardio-Respiratory Engineering, is a Senior Scientist at the University Health Network’s KITE research institute (UHN-KITE), an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto's Institute of Biomedical Engineering, and an adjunct faculty at the University of Manitoba. Dr. Yadollahi is Director of FabrIc-Based REsearch (FIBRE; www.kite-uhn.com/fibre) platform, with the vision to deliver revolutionary textile-based wearables for providing equitable access to healthcare, wherever users are.

Dr. Yadollahi’s research is focused on developing digital technologies to provide equitable access to healthcare for people with cardio-respiratory disorders. At UHN-KITE, Dr. Yadollahi leads the SleepdB laboratory, which includes state-of-the-art technologies to examine the intricate interplay between body fluid and cardio-respiratory disorders. SleepdB has gold standard clinical equipment to assess sleep and cardio-respiratory function. Moreover, through special infrastructure that enables full control of lighting and acoustics, SleepdB can realistically simulate home or in-hospital environments for technology development and validation. Yadollahi is a strong advocate of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility (IDEA), and chairs UHN Research’s IDEA committee. Beyond UHN, she leads and co-leads several national initiatives to train the next generation of researchers and innovators to design digital technologies to promote health equity and IDEA.

To date, Dr. Yadollahi has authored and co-authored more than 70 peer-reviewed manuscripts, presented over 130 times in scientific conferences, filed 3 patents, and been invited to give 70 talks on her research at prominent national and international academic institutions.
