Odjel za tehniku u medicini i biologiji

Područje interesa Odjela obuhvaća sva područja biomedicinskog inženjerstva kao interdisciplinarnog područja primjene inženjerskih znanja u medicini i biologiji. Rad članova Odjela uključuje primjenu matematičkih metoda, eksperimentalne postupke, razvoj novih tehnologija te praktične kliničke aplikacije. Odjel također provodi obrazovne i profesionalne aktivnosti te suradnju s gospodarstvom.

Poziv na predavanje: How algorithm...

How algorithm biases challenge artificial intelligence research and development

koje će održati dr. sc. Aurelié Jean u srijedu, 18. prosinca 2019. u 11.15 sati u Sivoj vijećnici Fakulteta elektrotehnike i računarstva, Unska 3.

U predavanju će govoriti o svom znanstvenom radu, profesionalnoj karijeri i svojoj nedavno izašloj knjizi pod nazivom: De l’autre côté de la machine: voyage d’une scientifique au pays des algorithmes (S druge strane stroja: putovanje jedne znanstvenice u zemlju algoritama).

Abstract:

In the past decade, artificial intelligence has led to a significant acceleration in technology development that has resulted in remarkable innovations in many fields such as medicine, education, finance, art or journalism. While autonomous weapons or the loss of millions of jobs are often seen as the main risk of AI-based technology, there is one challenge that also needs to be tackled today as it is already causes damage: algorithm bias. In this keynote, after introducing some key concepts around artificial intelligence and algorithm bias, I will present some concrete examples of algorithm biases from well-known cases as well as from my own work. I will then propose some key solutions to investigate further, in order to fight against those biases and to avoid any AI-based technology discrimination.

Biography:

Aurélie JEAN has been navigating for more than 10 years in computational sciences applied to engineering, medicine, education, economy, finance or journalism. After 9 years in the USA, in organizations such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology or Bloomberg, Aurélie lives and works today in USA and France, where she leads In Silico Veritas a development agency in computer modeling and analytics. Aurélie is a senior advisor at the Boston Consulting Group and Altermind, mentor for the Frontier Development Lab at NASA, teaches algorithm in graduate schools (mostly at MIT), conducts her research on algorithms, and writes for Le Point and Elle International on sciences and technologies. Aurélie is also an external collaborator for the Ministry of National Education of France.
