1. Business and Technology Trends Driving Energy and Utility Sector
Power, Gas and Water utilities are facing a combination of business, organizational, regulatory and technical changes all at once. This is the most exemplified by the competing priorities energy utility organizations have to deal with. Gartner has annually published our Hype Cycles, and also top 10 business trends and the top 10 technical trends that are shaping utility industry globally.
In this session, we highlight the most important business and technology trends and assess their impact on running and growing utility business. In addition, this session will provided an overview and taxonomy of IT and operational technologies in utility sector, discuss their maturation and adoption and give guidance on how to deal with these changes.

2. Trends Forcing Transformation of Energy Provisioning: Intelligent Grids and Smart Customers
Many of today's business models and regulatory frameworks for energy utilities were put in place back when the goal of energy policy was to provide reliable, affordable energy everywhere, with little concern over CO2 emissions or energy sustainability. Much has changed since then. While governmental energy policies and consumer attitudes are generally becoming more aligned toward addressing environmental and energy sustainability concerns, neither the regulatory frameworks for utilities nor utilities' business models are keeping pace.
The fundamental method of operating power grids has not changed much in the past 100 years since the time of Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla, making utility industry one of the last bastions of an analog era. Faced by changing market requirements, increase consumer awareness, energy sustainability challenges and environmental implications, utilities around the world are trying to figure out how to bring their networks into the digital age and address needs of a modern society. This effort to make the power grid more intelligent is generally referred to as creating a “Smart grid” and it is the main innovation driver in the utility sector.
