Dana 26.04.2007., četvrtak, u 14:00 sati u Sivoj vijećnici FER-a u organizaciji HND i Hrvatske sekcije IEEE, odjel za energetiku održana je tribina pod naslovom:

"ACR-1000: An Advanced CANDU Reactor Design for Improved Safety, Economics and Operability".

Prezentacija (nalazi se u repozitoriju odjela) je adresirala osnovne karakteristike najnovije izvedbe CANDU reaktora. Predavač je bio dr. Nik Popov direktor u ACR Licensing and PSA, Reactor Development Business Unit, Atomic Energy of Canada Limited i profesor na McMaster University, Department of Engineering Physics.

Abstract:
Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) developed the ACR-1000(tm) (Advanced CANDU Reactor(tm)-1000) as an evolutionary advancement of the current CANDU 6® reactor. The Advanced CANDU ReactorTM (ACRTM) is a Generation III+ pressure tube type reactor using light water coolant and heavy water moderator. The ACR-1000 will produce electrical power for a capital cost and a unit-energy cost significantly less than that of the current generation of operating nuclear plants, while achieving enhanced safety features, shorter construction schedule, high plant capacity factor, improved operations and maintenance, and increased operating life. The reference ACR-1000 plant design is based on an integrated two-unit plant, using low-enriched fuel and light-water coolant, with each unit having a nominal gross output of about 1165 MWe. The ACR-1000 design builds on and emphasizes the passive safety aspects of CANDU technology. This presentation provides an overview of the ACR-1000 design, focusing on the safety systems improvements, operability and maintainability.

Dr. Nik Popov:
Nik Popov's current position at AECL is Manager, Advanced CANDU Reactor Licensing and PSA. Nik is also an Adjunct Professor at the McMaster University in the Department of Engineering Physics, where he teaches graduate courses in Reactor Thermal-hydraulics Design and Analysis. Nik received a B.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering, a M.Sc. degree in Nuclear Engineering, and a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Zagreb, Croatia. Nik spent over 8 years working as lecturer and assistant professor at the University in Macedonia, and 3 years with Brookhaven National Laboratory, Department of Nuclear Energy, US. At Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL), Nik spent about 8 years in the Whiteshell Laboratories, working in the safety Thermal-hydraulics Branch on CATHENA code development, validation and application tasks. At AECL's Sheridan Park office, Nik worked in a variety of development and services projects, as well as functional and resource manager in Safety and Licensing. Nik teaches the CATHENA thermal-hydraulics code and the Canadian best-estimate and uncertainty assessment methodology at the SUNCOP International Training Course. Nik authored and co-authored more than 160 conference, journal and AECL publications.
