Abstract
This talk explores fungi as a basis for Engineered Living Materials (ELMs). We address the challenge of modeling their complex, decentralized growth by translating biological rules into hardware-compatible Cellular Automata (CA), where simple local interactions produce emergent mycelial networks. Moving beyond simulation, we introduce the concept of a functional digital twin, utilizing memristor-based architectures to replicate both the physical morphology and electrical signaling of fungi. This approach paves the way for novel bio-hybrid computing systems and the predictive design of next-generation smart materials.
Biography of the speaker
Theodoros Chatzinikolaou is a PhD Candidate in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of the Democritus University of Thrace, where he also received his Engineering Diploma with Integrated Master. His research is focused on future and emerging computing systems, including unconventional architectures and memristive circuits and systems. As an active volunteer, he currently serves as Vice-Chair and Student Activities Committee Chair in IEEE Region 8. His significant contributions have been recognized through the IEEE MGA Young Professionals Achievement Award, the IEEE CASS Pre-doctoral Grant, and the IEEE MGA Larry K. Wilson Regional Student Activities Award.
