Abstract:

Fast switching inside complex integrated circuits lead to the increase of the on-chip temperature, causing the degraded performance of the circuit. On-chip temperature sensors estimate the temperature and detect temperature variation across the chip. The sensor provides its output to the trimmable component of the critical circuit or initiates the shutdown in case of elevated temperature junction. The requirements demand that the sensor is compact and low-power. The front-ends of the existing solutions are mostly based on BJT, MOS transistors, and integrated resistors. The solution presented in this work uses both BJT and MOS in the front-end. The front-end generates temperature dependent currents which bias ring oscillators, generating temperature-dependent frequencies. The frequencies are combined in the all-digital time-domain Sigma-Delta converter, unlike the standard solution with the voltage-domain ADC occupying large area. The circuit achieves small area and its large portion is occupied by digital circuits which enables the easier design scaling.
