Zajednički odjel za zrakoplovne elektroničke sustave te geoznanosti i daljinska istraživanja

Interesi članova društva za zrakoplovne elektroničke sustave pokrivaju organizaciju, projektiranje, razvoj, integraciju i rad složenih sustava za različita okruženja poput svemira, te zemljine atmosfere i površine. Takovi sustavi uključuju navigaciju, radar, sonar, telemetriju i daljinsko upravljanje.
 
Društvo za geoznanosti i daljinska istraživanja pokriva teoriju, razvoj i ostvarenje sustava za motrenje i daljinska istraživanja Zemlje, oceana, atmosfere i svemira, te procesiranje i interpretaciju prikupljenih podataka.

Mihael Mohorčič: "LOG-a-TEC – wireless sensor network based experimental infrastructure for research, testing and validation"

 

Wireless sensor networks are making their way to become integral parts of smart cities, smart grids and other smart environments, essentially becoming sensorial infrastructure transparent to applications and users. This has been enabled by the transition from homogeneous, dedicated and proprietary solutions to heterogeneous, large, scalable and flexible deployments. The later, however, are still posing numerous questions and real-world challenges that cannot be addressed analitically or in simulated environments but require experiementation in real targeted operating environments, calling for a generic experimental sensorial infrastructure which in turn can also serve as infrastructure for application domain specific testbeds.

The aim of this lecture is to present the LOG-a-TEC experimental infrastructure, its role as a testbed in experimentally driven research and development, its basic building blocks and capabilities, and the overall setup extending from a cognitive radio and networking testbed towards pilot deployments for different application areas. Some examples of using the LOG-a-TEC experimental infrastructure will be outlined especially for radio spectrum occupancy sensing, environmental monitoring, smart grids and the sensors as a service concept.

 

Mihael Mohorčič is senior research fellow and head of the Department of Communication Systems at the Jozef Stefan Institute, and since 2006 assistant professor at the Jozef Stefan International Postgraduate School. Hisresearch interests are in the fields of network protocols and architectures, cognitive radio and networking andlarge-scale heterogeneous sensor networks.He co-authored several books and book chapters, more than 100peer-reviewed journal and conference papers, and has been actively participating to more than 15 EU Framework Programme projects.

Andrej Hrovat: "Radio propagation modelling for wireless communication systems in different operational environments"

The mobile and broadcast operator customers,as well as public protection and disaster relief forces require and expect to have access to mobile services anywhere at any time. Provision of wireless connectivity in remote hard to reach unpopulated areas and “special” environments such as underground corridors and tunnels thus become very challenging for scientist and engineers. In order to deliver required services the additional terrestrial infrastructure have be installed or/and satellite communication channels should be applied. For the optimal wireless communication systemsdesigning radio propagation models and received signal strength measurements plays the significant role.
The aim of this lecture is to present radio signal propagation measurements and simulations for different communication systems in various environments. The emphasis is given to the in tunnel radio signal measurements and modeling at different frequencies. In addition to the terrestrial wireless propagation, the measurements of Ka band satellite signal will be described.

 

Andrej Hrovat is with the Department of Communication Systems at the Jožef Stefan Institute since 2004. He is also an assistant at the Jozef Stefan International Postgraduate School. He received B.Sc. and M.Sc. in electrical engineering from University of Ljubljana in 2004 and 2008, respectively. He finished his Ph.D. at the Jozef Stefan International Postgraduate School in 2011. His Ph.D. research was in the field of radio signal propagation in special environments. He works on several projects connected with professional mobile communication systems, 2/3G, WiFi and WiMAX technologies, satellite and sensor networks. His main areas of expertise are radio signal propagation prediction, channel models, digital mobile communication systems and development of the test applications.

Tomaž Javornik: "Research opportunities of open source software radio coverage planning tool RaPlaTin emerging wireless communication systems"

Radio signal path loss prediction plays an important role in the network planning of wireless communication systems. The emerging technologies such as Self Organizing Networks (SONs) and Cognitive Radio (CR) also rely on efficient and accurate path loss prediction. Several commercial path loss prediction tools are available on the market, but due to missing support of modification/addition of propagation models, prediction tool integration in user developedtools/platformsand/or due their price, they are not suitable for academic non-commercial use. Mentioned drawbacks are calling for an open source radio prediction tool.
The aim of this lecture is to present an open source radio planning tool (RaPlaT), which is an add-on to theworld’s leading free GIS software GRASS, its role in the theoretical research and its applications in the international and national ongoing research projects at the Department of Communication Systems.

 

Tomaž Javornik is senior research fellow and head of the Networked Embedded Systems Laboratory at the Department of Communication Systems at the Jožef Stefan Institute. Since 2007 he is also assistant professor at the Jožef Stefan International Postgraduate School.  His research and working experience are in the field of wireless communications, focusing on wireless channel modeling and the development and performance analysis of physical layer in fixed and mobile systems including terrestrial, stratospheric and satellite systems including radio and free space optical links. He is author or co-author of more than 60 refereed journal and conference papers, several book chapters and three patents.
