Abstract:
The recent advancement in the field of nanotechnology has provided the very capability of miniaturizing many conventional antennas and scatterers, such as a dipole, Yagi-Uda, sphere, and extending their operating regimes from RF and microwave to optical frequencies. Particularly, plasmonic systems with characteristic dimensions at a
deep-nanometer scale, ranging from several tens of nanometers to only a few nanometers, have attracted a lot of attention. This extremely small scale essentially introduces non-classical effects, for example, the spectrum shifts of surface plasmon resonances, excitation of confined longitudinal waves, quantum tunneling, which may strongly influence the optical features of the system. A detailed theoretical treatment of these effects, which clearly goes beyond the well-known classical concepts, is thus required to accurately predict the response of arbitrary deep-nanometer topologies. In this talk, the optical properties of deep-nanometer structures are investigated by using a nonlocal hydrodynamic model with additional boundary conditions (ABCs). Several hydrodynamic models with different ABCs are studied. The results for the near and far field characteristics of spherical nanoparticles, which can be analyzed analytically, are demonstrated.
