Odjel za komunikacije

Odjel za komunikacije obuhvaća znanost, tehnologiju i aplikacije koje podržavaju prijenos i organizaciju informacija različitih vrsta medija i formata kroz komunikacijske mreže i kanale. Navedeno može uključivati:

  • Arhitekturu, kontrolu, upravljanje, učinkovitost i primjene elektroničkih, optičkih i bežičnih komunikacijskih mreža;
  • Tehnologije i servisi za postojeće mreže i mreže u nastajanju te Internet;
  • Teorije i metode modulacije, detekcije, kodiranja i signalizacije kroz kanale, oblikovanje i vođenje mreža s komutacijom paketa i mreža s komutacijom kanala;
  • Sustave za komutiranje i usmjeravanje;
  • Komunikacijske protokole, programsku podršku i programe koji djeluju između aplikacije i mreže;
  • Metode za postizanje kvalitete i pouzdanosti usluge;
  • Komunikacijske sposobnosti terminala, uređaja i informacijskih sustava;
  • Komunikacijske standarde i specifikacije;
  • Utjecaj komunikacijskih tehnologija na društvo i pojedinca.

Trenutačno postoji jedan studentski ogranak Odjela za komunikacije, pridružen Studentskom ogranku Sveučilišta u Zagrebu.

Evolution of Core Traffic for Growing CDNs

Sažetak:

Traffic growth forecasts announce a dramatic future for core networks, struggling to keep the pace of traffic augmentation. Internet traffic growth primarily stems from the proliferation of cloud services and the massive amounts of data distributed by the content delivery networks (CDNs) hosting these services. In this talk, we will discuss the evolution of core traffic in the presence of growing CDNs. While expanding the capacities of existing data centers (DCs) directly translates the forecasted compound-annual-growth-rate (CAGR) of user traffic to the CAGR of carried core link traffic, building new geographically dispersed DCs may reduce the core traffic growth rate by placing content closer to the users. However, reducing DC-to-user traffic by building new DCs comes at a trade-off with increasing inter-DC content synchronization traffic. Thus, the resulting overall core traffic growth will depend on the types of services supported and their associated synchronization requirements. We present a long-term evolution study to assess the implications of different CDN expansion strategies on core network traffic growth considering a mix of services in proportions and growth rates corresponding to well-known traffic forecasts.

Biografija:

Nina Skorin-Kapov is an Associate Professor at the University Center of Defence (CUD), San Javier Air Force Base, Spain. She is also affiliated with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER) at the University of Zagreb as an external Associate Professor. Her general research interests include optimization and planning in telecommunications, in particular in wide-area optical networks. 
Nina received the Dipl.-Ing. and Ph.D. degrees in Telecommunications from the University of Zagreb, FER, Croatia, in 2003 and 2006, respectively. From 2003-2013, she worked at the Department of Telecommunications at FER, University of Zagreb, as a Research Assistant (2003-8), as Assistant Professor (2008-2012), and as Associate Professor (2012-2013). She completed a  postdoctoral stay at Télécom ParisTech (formerly ENST), Paris, France in academic year 2006/7, and various short-term research stays at the Technical University of Cartagena (UPCT), Spain.
Prof. Skorin-Kapov has published over 50 scientific papers, 20 of which in top JCR journals, has participated in several national and international projects (H2020 METRO-HAUL, FP7 BONE, FP7 ePhotone/One+, COST Actions 291, IC0806 and CA15127), and has coordinated two of them. In 2008 she received the Annual National Award of Croatia awarded to the best young scientist, in the field of technical sciences. Nina is currently an associate editor of the OSA/IEEE Journal of Optical Communications and Networking, and previously served on the editorial board of CIT Journal of Computing and Information Technology. She has served on Technical Program Comittees of numerous international conferences, including IEEE Globecom, IEEE ICC, and IEEE HPSR,  and was TCP co-chair of the international conference ONDM 2016. She has reviewed project proposals for the Croatian Science Foundation and the Engineering Research Council of Canada, and served on the Advisory Board of the Institute of Telemedicine of the Republic of Croatia from 2009-2012.
