Abstract:

The susceptibility of integrated circuits (ICs) to electromagnetic interferences (EMI) has become of great concern in the past twenty years. The need for reproducible susceptibility evaluation tests and EMI robust integrated devices has spread along several application fields e.g. from the automotive to the consumer one. The proposed presentation focuses on one of the most commonly employed analog ICs, namely the operational amplifier (OpAMP). In particular it deals with high accuracy (offset compensated) OpAMPsand aims at showing one of the most important techniques employed to evaluate their robustness to conducted electromagnetic interferences, called the EMI rejection ratio (EMIRR) method. Furthermore, transistor level insights, examples of robust designs and measurement results are provided to show the causes of OpAMP weaknesses against EMI. Also important countermeasures are described which can be adopted during the IC design.

CV's:

Andrea Lavarda

received his B.SC and M.Sc. degrees from Politecnico of Turin, Italy, in 2009 and 2011 respectively. From 2011 to 2012 he was an R&D engineer with Facet s.r.l, where he worked on automotive magnetic sensors. He started his PhD in 2013 in the EMC microelectronic department of Politecnico of Torino and in 2014 he joined the EMC and Analog IC Design department of the Technology University of Graz, Austria, to complete his PhD studies in collaboration with Infineon Technologies AG, working on the design of precision EMI robust offset compensated operational amplifiers for current sensing interfaces. He is currently finishing his PhD with the EMC department of the Technology University of Graz and the Body Power group of Infineon Technologies AG Villach. His research interests include precision analog and mixed-signal front ends and EMI robust design.

Bernd Deutschmann

has received his M.Sc. degree and the Ph.D. degree in telecommunication engineering from the Graz University of Technology, Austria, in 1999 and 2002, respectively. In 2006, he joined the Automotive Power EMC Center of Infineon Technologies AG, where he worked on the improvement of the EMC of ICs for automotive power applications. Since 2014 he is with the Graz University of Technology, as a Full Professor with the Institute of Electronics. During his research activities, he has applied for several patents and has authored and coauthored numerous papers and technical articles in the field of electromagnetic compatibility of integrated circuits.

Gunter Winkler

received the Dipl.-Ing. degree in electrical engineering from the Graz University of Technology. Since then he is working at the Institute of Electronics at the above mentioned university. During his work he finished his Ph.D. in 1992. The main focus of his scientific work in the field of electronic circuits and systems is the electromagnetic compatibility of analog and digital circuits as well as high resolution A/D-Converters. He was establishing the EMC-Laboratory at the Institute of Electronics for project related measurements and practical training of students.
