Sažetak predavanja

Today's engineering graduates will work in a globalized workplace and are thus required to cope with a multifaceted, fast changing and multicultural environment. Intercultural competence – the ability to communicate and behave appropriately and effectively across cultural boundaries – is therefore one of the key qualifications that higher educational institutions should impart. This is, however, no small task as research shows that exposure to intercultural encounters without proper intervention measures and critical reflection will not transfer into a skills gain. Using the critical incident method, this lecture will address aspects relevant for the multicultural classroom and impacting student learning, such as culturally influenced communication and learning styles. These, in turn, may have significant consequences for assessment methods and exam results. A discussion of Milton Bennett's Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity and Darla Deardorff's Pyramidal Model of Intercultural Confidence will reflect on the necessity of continuous learning both on the teachers' and students' sides.
