Abstract
The talk will present a comparative analysis of synchronous and asynchronous digital design evaluating the potentail advantages of the latter with respect to the increased variability of current manifacturing processes. In addition other aspects such as signal integrity, system security and electromagnetic emisions will be presented.
To overcome the major drawbacks of asynchronous systems, which are a more complex design style and the lack of appropriate design tools, a methology for automating the "desynchronization" task of existing synchrounous designs will be presented.
Finally the talk will describe the ASPIDA processor which has been designed along with this methodology and the results of its test which have validated part of the assumptions about asynchronous system design.

Prof. Francesco Gregoretti

received in 1975 the Dr. Eng. degree in Electronic Engineering from Politecnico di Torino, Italy  where he started his academic activity as Assistant Professor in 1978 and where he is now Full Professor of Microelectronics.

In 1976 and 1977 he was Assistant Professor at the Laboratoire de Calculatrices Digitales at the Swiss Federal Institute of Tecnology in Lausanne (Switzerland) and in 1983 and 1984 Visiting Scientist at the  Department of Computer Science of Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh (USA).

His main research interest have been in digital electronics and in particular in MOS VLSI circuits, in massively parallel multimicroprocessor systems for VLSI CAD tools, in low level image processing architectures and in cellular neural networks.

More recently his research has been focused to codesign methodologies for complex electronic systems, to methodologies for reduction of Electromagnetic emissions by the design of asynchronous architectures and to the design of ultra low poer architecture for wireless sensor networks.
