Patients and healthcare professionals around the world are facing similar challenges. The challenges are insufficient funding, inefficient cost control, complex legal policies, stressful environments, administrative overload, and skilled professionals shortages. As a result, healthcare expenses are constantly rising while healthcare quality is deteriorating. These trends have been reported by the World Health Organization and governments in various countries. In order to address these challenges, private and public institutions are driving the eHealth incentive that promotes the use of ICT for more efficient healthcare.
The lecture presents an overview of eHealth technologies and explains how they are being used in three distinct fields of healthcare: inpatient care, outpatient care, and national healthcare. Inpatient care professionals use ICT systems during clinical treatment in health delivery organizations. Outpatient care is based on ICT systems for patient care at home, workplace, or other types of community settings. Finally, national healthcare requires ICT systems that support nationwide exchange and management of healthcare data. Building eHealth systems for each of these three domains is a demanding task because requirements are subject to complex medical practice, legislation, and regulations. As a real-life case study, the talk will include an overview of the Ericsson Nikola Tesla eHealth portfolio including hospital information system (Care4U-HIS), remote patient monitoring system (EMH), and nationwide healthcare integration platform (Care4U-HNIS).
